Protests erupt on R28

Protesters angry about water and electricity being cut.

Police had to intervene as residents of Mohlakeng embarked on a service delivery protest on the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria on Tuesday night.

According to Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, “The protest started at 6pm as disgruntled residents of Mohlakeng Extension 11 threw stones and set tyres alight. In addition to this, rocks were put in the road to prevent motorists from driving on the section of the R28 just in front of Extension 11.”

No injuries were sustained by any party involved as well as no damage being done to any property.

The herald was told on scene that residents’ water and electricity had been cut which sparked the protest.

Randfontein Police as well as Gauteng Public Order Police were on the scene negotiating with the protesters to refrain from disrupting public roads.

The councillor responsible for the area allegedly attended the riot but protesters refused to talk to him as they said he had failed them. They would only talk to the Mayor directly.

It is strongly believed that the residents will be continuing their protest on Wednesday.

The road has since been cleared for motorists to pass by as “Patrols were conducted during the night to ensure peace and order,” Ernst added.
