VIDEO: Elderly woman causes rude awakening

Elderly resident uses a unique alarm to wake up municipality employees.

A very angry elderly resident has decided that enough is enough.

This after she alleges that she had been trying to get through to Randfontein Local Municipality’s water and electricity accounts department for an entire hour.

“I have been trying to get a hold of them since 8am, for an entire hour. My account usually gets delivered to by post box but this time there was nothing. This is unacceptable. I’ve decided that someone needs to wake them up,” Janet van der Merwe said.

Van der Merwe decided to wake the Randfontein Local Municipality up on the morning of 2 March, at approximately 9:20am — literally. She briskly walked the corridors of Randfontein Local Municipality while simultaneously banging a spoon on a lid of a pot.

The noise caused officials’ jaws to drop and pause in the middle of phone calls. The two out of three offices that were manned by officials went about their work almost as if nothing was happening — there was more of an outrage outside the water and electricity accounts department.

Van der Merwe was directed to speak to the manager of the water and electricity accounts department. She confronted him about the phones not being answered between 8am to 9am. He explained that the municipality was recently broken into and that he and his higher-ups were discussing the incident.

While van der Merwe was there, she decided to get her water and electricity account in person and had one of the officials delve into the records to find her account.

After all the ruckus caused and the municipality undoubtedly being woken-up, a very satisfied van der Merwe walked out and said, “we pay their salaries. We pay for their services. What exactly are we paying for when we get this kind of service?”
