The Herald goes back, way back, to 12 December 1986 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.
It’s Throwback Thursday and the Herald went back in time to 12 December 1986, when one of the front page stories was headlined ‘Hail wrecks [sic] havoc’.
Randfontein and Westonaria were hit by a major hailstorm in December 1986. Gardens looked as if locusts had struck, trees were downed by the accompanying wind and decorative Christmas lights were virtually destroyed.
The Herald spoke to the mayors of both towns in this article. Mayor Hans Jacobs of Randfontein said that he felt helpless when he witnessed the storm.”It is with a feeling of extreme gratitude that I witnessed the co-operation between the town’s businesses,” he said.
Mayor Dirk van der Hoff of Westonaria thanked the municipality for their prompt actions of aid towards the residents.
