Three busted with railway infrastructure worth close to R1 million

Three arrested in Westonaria for allegedly stealing railway infrastructure worth an estimated R 770 000.

Three men were arrested in Westonaria on Thursday, 9 January for having stolen railway infrastructure belonging to Transnet.

Colonel Moonsamy, Westonaria Police station commander confirmed the arrests and said the suspects were nabbed as soon as they tried to flee.

“The suspects were allegedly busy removing the infrastructure while being monitored during an operation by a security company.

“Police and security personnel managed to stop two vehicles when they drove onto the road. Although there were more than 10 suspects, only three were arrested,” Moonsamy said.

“The vehicles were found loaded with railway line tracks and Pandrol springs. The two vehicles have since been impounded and the case is under investigation,” Moomsamy added.

According to Johny White, manager of 2RM Security contracted to Transnet, the value of the stolen infrastructure is estimated to be R770 000.
