Don’t fall victim to this latest housing scam

The Department of Human Settlements urged residents to report any suspicious activity relating to fraud and corruption following the latest housing scam doing the rounds.

The South African Police Service supports the warning from the Department of Human Settlements (DHS) about the latest low-income/ subsidised (RDP) housing scam occurring via social media platforms and posters in the streets.

According to the department, fraudsters use their details such as postal address, physical address, contact details and other details that are accessible to the public to defraud potential victims.

This usually results in the fraudster distributing fraudulent housing documents such as a ‘housing allocation document’, ‘my subsidy application HSS screenshot’, ‘housing subsidy approval letter’, ‘deeds office (Windeed) property document’ and ‘letter of demand for payment’ to the victim.

Members of the public are urged to verify the authenticity of any request or documents received by the department and not to make any payment to the fraudster.

Report any suspicious activity relating to fraud and corruption to:

• DHS Special Investigation Directorate on 012 421 1503/ 1416/ 1535
• DHS call centre on 0800 146 873
