Police arrest suspect with AK-47 in Mohlakeng
Police say the suspect was found with a fully loaded magazine during an illegal mining operation.
Police have recovered an AK-47 rifle and other items linked to criminal activity during separate incidents in Randfontein and Nellmapius.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, one suspect was arrested in Mohlakeng on August 6 during Operation Karabo, an operation aimed at combating illegal mining activities.
Nevhuhulwi said the suspect was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle and one fully loaded magazine.
In a separate incident, members of the Public Order Policing (POP) unit recovered signal jammers and a portable power station during routine patrols in Nellmapius Extension 2.
“Members were transporting a colleague home after flexi duties when they noticed a white Toyota Hilux bakkie parked at a residence,” Nevhuhulwi said.
She said an adult male fled from the yard after seeing the marked police vehicle.
“Upon inspection, members discovered that the vehicle was being stripped. Further investigation led to the recovery of two signal jammers and one portable power station inside the vehicle,” Nevhuhulwi said.
Police later established that the Toyota Hilux had been hijacked in Koporo Street, Nellmapius Extension 6, within the Silverton policing area.
The recovered items included two signal jammers and one portable power station. No arrests have been made in connection with the hijacked vehicle incident.
Nevhuhulwi said police investigations into the incidents are continuing.
