Criminals plunge Mohlakeng, Zenzele into darkness

Parts of Mohlakeng and Zenzele have no power after a substation was targeted on Easter Monday.

Criminals targeting substations in the Randfontein region have struck again, this time by entering the switching station in Mohlakeng and cutting all the main feeder and outgoing cables.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said the incident occurred on Easter Monday, April 10, and has since left residents without power for hours on end.

“Last night, syndicates broke into the switching station in Mohlakeng extension 5 and cut all the main feeder and outgoing cables. It will take time to restore the electricity in the area as we are busy assessing the damages inside the substation,” Montshiwa said.

He added that this has resulted in a power outage which affects residents of Mohlakeng extensions 4 and 5 as well as those in Zenzele.
