Parkrun coming to R’fontein
Randfontein's first ever parkrun will take place on Saturday, 15 June, at the Randfontein Golf Club, Homestead Ave at 8am.
For the first time ever, Randfonteiners will have the chance to participate in a local parkrun.
Sydney James, Randfontein parkrun event director, said that Randfontein’s first ever parkrun will take place on Saturday, 15 June, at the Randfontein Golf Club, Homestead Ave at 8 am.
“This will also be my first parkrun, but I have been following the parkruns in different towns on social media and thought it might work in Randfontein,” Sydney said.
He said that it all began with a post on a local Facebook group.
I asked people what they thought of a parkrun in Randfontein and the post got over 50 positive replies.
“People commented and said that they travel a long way to participate in parkruns and that our very own parkrun would be a great idea.”
He said that he saw a lot of younger people running in the streets of Randfontein and realised that there is a culture of being active in the community. He even approached Randmark Running and Cycle Club, which is very supportive of this initiative.
“It’s not all about the love for running. Parkrun gives you something to look forward to every week and it is great for your health,” he added.
