Young Thabang named captain of juniors at Super Tigers Academy

'I'm looking forward to leading my teammates' – 17-year-old Thabang Mathuloe, the new captain of the junior team at Super Tigers Academy.

‘With great power comes great responsibility.’

In the words of Marvel superhero Peter Parker (Spider-Man), new captain of the Super Tigers Academy, Thabang Mathuloe is well aware of the responsibility on his shoulders. The 17-year-old Grade 11 learner at Randfontein High School (RHS) said getting the opportunity is something he will grab with both hands.

“I’m looking forward to leading my teammates. Realistically, I’m don’t feel too pressured because they are supportive and cooperative, but I know there are certain traits a captain must show on and off the field every time – showing leadership,” Thabang said.

He thanked his coach, Bongani ‘Ace’ Duiker for instilling the right qualities in him, which he said would help him influence the whole team.

“Part of what I do is always making sure that I show up early for training sessions, and I motivate the team whenever I sense that the morale is low among them. It is part my core responsibilities to make sure that every teammate puts in an extra effort so that we get the best of the best performances,” he explained.

Thabang said while he wants to grow in the sport, he wants to play a style similarly admired all over the world. He admitted though this is going to require a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment.

While he juggles his training session and schoolwork, he said the impact of Covid-19 and its restrictions have taken its toll on his progression and development as a sportsman.

“I can only manage one training session per week, which is significantly less considering pre-lockdown. I used to train eight times a week.”

However, he advised everyone to keep their heads high and look to the future with hope.
