Rugby supporters enjoyed an action-packed day as Randfontein Rugby Club hosted Diggers Rugby Club at Greenhills Stadium.

The pre-season friendly featured first, second and third teams, as well as U21 sides, offering players across all levels a valuable opportunity to test combinations and build momentum ahead of the competitive season.

The intensity was evident from the outset, with the U21 and third teams setting the tone through fast-paced, physical encounters. Both clubs demonstrated squad depth, with younger players eager to impress and push for higher honours. Diggers claimed a narrow 19–17 win in the U21 clash – their only victory of the day.

Randfontein’s third team responded emphatically, dominating proceedings to secure a 52–0 win.

The second team continued the momentum, showcasing experience and cohesion in a commanding 67–0 victory, while also allowing the coaching staff to experiment with combinations ahead of league fixtures.

All eyes then turned to the main event as the first teams took to the field. Although the contest began with intent from both sides, Randfontein’s attacking structure and physical dominance soon proved decisive. Early tries by Andrew Volschenk, Dylan Viviers and Franco Tiedt put Diggers under sustained pressure.

The performance was further strengthened by an excellent kicking display, with Keagan Fortune slotting seven conversions and Tiaan Naudé adding three. Randfontein sealed a comprehensive 92–0 victory, with Diggers unable to break through their defence.

The fixture served as a reminder of the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs, which has consistently produced competitive and entertaining encounters.

Beyond the scorelines, the day highlighted the importance of pre-season fixtures in building match fitness, integrating new players and strengthening team cohesion.
