Mamelodi YMCA elderly service centre has elected board members last week Thursday.
This comes after they were advised by the department of social development to elect board members.
The club consisting of 65 members has been operating for 13 years. When they first started they were based at the YMCA hall and later moved to the SOS Children’s Village in Khalambazo, Mamelodi East. Together they do aerobics, physical exercises, sing and go on outings.
Audrey Zinde, founder of the club, said it has been over a year since they tried to elect a board.
However, she said she was happy they finally have a board that will help oversee all the activities at the club.
“I feel so relieved we have elected a board. It already feels like a burden has been lifted from my shoulders. People who are elected are people who enjoy and love working with elders. We look forward to working with them,” said Zinde.
Ida Matshetshisi from social development assisted in the election of the board. “I am looking forward to working with you and I believe we will make this work,” said Matshetshisi.
The newly appointed chairperson, James Mabe, said: “We put everything to God and believe this will be a success. We want to save the organisation and are looking forward to this relationship.”
Additional member, ward councillor Thembi Sebata said elders are important people in our society and it is important they are taken care of.
