Metro police deny looting truck
Tshwane metro police did not loot a bakery truck, says executive director Console Tleane after after a a picture of officers loading loaves of bread went viral on Monday.
The Tshwane metro police has denied looting a bakery truck after it overturned on the N1 at Samrand Avenue on Monday morning.
This came after a picture of two metro police officers putting bread in their car went viral on social media.
Executive director Console Tleane said investigations revealed that the officers did not steal any bread from the truck.
“Instead, they secured the scene and ensured that that free-flow traffic was facilitated. The supervisor from the bakery arrived on the scene and realised that the officers assisted to ensure that the truck was not looted,” he said in a statement.
Tleane said the supervisor said he gave the officers a few loaves of bread as a “thank you” gesture.
“The department has spoken to the bakery supervisor to this effect. It is unfortunate that some have maliciously spread the innuendo through social media that the officers stole the bread.”
He said the officers, however, were issued a written warning after they failed to declare their gift to the department.
“To this end, the officers will be issued with first written warnings and advised not to accept ‘gifts’ without declaring them, even if it is for good work done.”
