New measures to protect Gauteng police in the field have been taken after two officers were shot dead on the N3 outside of Johannesburg on Sunday.
“The safety and well-being of our police officers is our priority,” said police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza.
She did not elaborate on the nature of the new measures.
Kweza said these new measures were important at this time that police had declared war against crime, especially in Gauteng.
“Through crime intelligence information, our members are out there in the streets to ensure that criminals are arrested. It is during these confrontations that our members are attacked,” she said.
She said the biggest problem the police faced was illegal firearms.
“We are busy recovering them from the criminals, but we can do much better with the assistance of the community. Just over the past two months, we have recovered 456 illegal firearms and charged suspects.”
Kweza said that if criminals thought the police would give up because of the recent shootings, they had a surprise coming. “We will do this within the confines of the law. We will ensure that our members’ deaths are not in vain,” she said.
Two police officers were killed on Sunday in a shootout between police and an unknown number of men on the N3 Johannesburg highway.
