Three men accused of hijacking a cigarette truck this week were denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Kevin Solomons said the three would be back in court next month. They were arrested in Silverton on Tuesday night after a British American Tobacco truck was hijacked in Garsfontein.
The three men were caught offloading cigarettes about an hour after the crime was committed.
The stolen cigarettes were worth more than R600 000. Solomons said: “Cigarette robberies have become a problem these days, with British American Tobacco trucks being targeted in particular. We have told the drivers of tobacco trucks to come to the station so we can escort them when they deliver tobacco.”
