Robert Swartz, a University of Pretoria student playing for their Varsity Football team, is currently also the captain of the Varsity team.
Swartz was born in Port Elizabeth but has been staying in Kilner Park for almost 20 years. The 25-year-old right-back has been in the Tuks grounds for a long time and he remains one of their trusted and experienced players.
He joined University of Pretoria development side at the age of 15 in 2005 while still in high school. “I was discovered by coach Steve Barker ten years ago at the U/15 Championships. Since then I have grown from strength to strength. I enjoy playing and I realised early in my life that this is what I want to do for a profession,” he said.
Swartz played in the National first division for Milano United and also for the University of Cape Town before coming back to Pretoria in 2014 for a second spell with Amatuks.
“One of my biggest achievements was winning the U/21 national championship in 2011 with Tuks. Getting picked to represent South Africa at the world games is also a motivation and an achievement.”
Swartz is one of 20 players chosen to represent South Africa at the World Student Games in Gwanju, South Korea. The games kicked off on 24 June and will end on 15 July 2015.
“I just want to help the team to do well there. If we do well at the games, we will get an invitation every year which will help our football,” he said.
Swartz listens to RnB and HipHop and enjoys eating sushi. He is currently doing his honours degree in Sports Recreation and Management at Tuks.
