A foreign national accused of raping a four-year old girl in a Mamelodi shop will appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, police said.
Spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the investigation into the crime was continuing.
On Thursday, a witness who only identified herself as Onica, said police were called when angry locals threatened to attack the culprit. They also tried to burn down the shop where he worked.
The victim’s grandmother noticed the four-year-old child bleeding when she arrived home from the shop earlier that day, said Onica.
“When the grandmother saw the little girl was bleeding, she went to the shop to find out what had happened. When they got to the shop, the little girl started crying and refused to enter,” Onica said.
Maheso said police were alerted and rushed to the scene, where the 38-year-old foreign national was arrested.
“We appreciate the community’s efforts to alert the police and not taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
Children of Section 2, also known as D4 in Mamelodi, picketed outside the shop demanding foreign nationals be taken away from the community.
Some of the posters read Makula a fanele a hambe (Indians have to go) and Pakistanis are rapists.
