Spate of petrol thefts in the north
Service station owners are warned of a recent spate of petrol theft in the north of Pretoria.
Service station owners should be on the lookout for petrol thieves, following a recent spate of fuel theft around the north of Pretoria.
Last week two service stations in the north were hit by unknown men who filled up jerry cans with fuel and fled without paying.
Total service station owner Danie Joubert said a closed circuit television camera captured footage of two men arriving last Monday night in a Toyota Corolla with no registration plates.
One was in the driver’s seat while the other one stepped out of the car and asked the petrol attendant to fill up their jerry cans.
“They asked for two 25 litre jerry cans to be filled up. The one guy, who can be seen on camera, jumped back in the car and they drove off,” Joubert said.
The men got away with about R700 worth of fuel.
The following day, a silver-grey Toyota Corolla with no registration plates fled with unpaid fuel from the Sasol service station in Bon Accord.
Co-owner Rosa Santosuosso said an unknown man parked the Corolla at one of the petrol pumps around midnight.
“He asked the attendant to fill up his jerry cans which were in the boot. The attendant filled them up but as he closed the boot, the driver drove off,” she told Rekord.
Santosuosso said the man filled up 97 litres of fuel, valued at R1 300. Her CCTV cameras were unable to capture a clear image of the driver.
Joubert said he has laid a complaint of theft with the Akasia police.
Akasia police spokesperson Captain Riana Van Aarde said the matter was being investigated. “A case of theft has been opened.”
