Wanted man rearrested
Kirvin Arendse, who was wanted by the Brooklyn police, was rearrested on Saturday morning.
A 40-year-old wanted man was rearrested in Eersterust on Saturday morning after he failed to reappear in court for possession of stolen property, police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said.
Weilbach said the man, Kirwin Cowen Arendse, was found when a resident contacted the police after his photo was circulated in the media.
“The information led the police to an address in Eersterust where Arendse was hiding from the long arm of the law. On Saturday at 11:30, investigating officers from the Brooklyn police rearrested him.”
Arendse was arrested in September last year after police noticed a suspicious vehicle speeding away from Menlo Park Primary School.
They chased after the vehicle, which collided into another vehicle in Hazelwood, Weilbach said.
“A laptop that was reported stolen was found inside the suspect’s vehicle. The police immediately arrested Arendse and a second suspect,” she said.
This was not the first time Arendse was arrested. Weilbach said he had numerous previous cases against him for similar offences.
In February, Arendse was granted bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to March.
“Arendse did not turn up for his next court appearance, and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the court.”
Weilbach thanked the media and the community for their assistance in finding Arendse.
“Since the request first appeared in the media, the police received numerous phone calls. The relationship between the community, police and media is integral in the fight against crime.”
