The Sunnyside police cluster arrested 110 people at the weekend
A total of 110 people were arrested in the Sunnyside cluster after a crime prevention event under Operation Fiela was rolled out at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said five people were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, negligence in handling firearms and possession of an imitation firearm.
She said seven others were detained for drug-related offences.
One of the drug offenders was a 31-year-old dagga dealer from Monument Park who is originally from Lesotho.
“He is a regular vendor on Skilpad Road. On Friday, the Brooklyn police searched for the man after receiving a tip-off from the community that the man was selling drugs at his peanut and cigarette stand,” Weilbach said.
Police searched the vendor and found match boxes with dagga inside the man’s sleeve.
Weilbach said 30 other people were arrested for driving under the influence, she said.
“Other arrests were made for various offences such as assault, malicious damage to property, theft, pedestrian source of danger, business break-in, possession of suspected stolen goods and 46 undocumented persons.”
The 110 arrested will appear at either the Hatfield Community Court or the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
“The police and other law enforcement officials in the Sunnyside cluster will continue their concentrated efforts and high police visibility to ensure everybody’s safety by preventing crime from happening and to keep criminals at bay,” said Weilbach.
