Man held after theft of cop car

Man arrested after a police vehicle was stolen and used to commit crime.

A man was arrested in Winterveldt on Thursday for allegedly stealing a police vehicle and using it in criminal activities.

Loate police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu said the 34-year man was caught at Slovo section in Winterveldt by members of the national crime intervention unit.

“The unmarked police vehicle was stolen at Tlhabane, Rustenburg, earlier this month,” said Chabangu.

A police officer had parked the service red Golf 5 GTI outside his residence before it was pinched.

Police were tipped off by a local and went to the man’s house where they found his girlfriend.

“They questioned her and as they were busy talking to her… the suspect arrived and he was arrested,” Chabangu said.

It was found that the car had been used in other crimes and was without a registration number when the police recovered it.

The man was to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court soon, Chabangu said.
