N4 shootings suspects in court on Thursday
One suspect escaped during a shootout with police after a cigarette truck had been robbed last Tuesday.
The five suspects arrested in connection with the robbery of a cigarette truck in Silverton are due to appear in court on Thursday. This according to Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato.
“All of the suspects are due in court on Thursday, 6 August for a formal bail application,” he said.
Seven suspects robbed a British American Tobacco truck in the Silverton area on Tuesday 28 July. Police responded to a call and a chase ensued, leading to a shootout between police and the suspects. The suspects abandoned their car on the N4 and attempted to flee, but were caught by police.
The Gauteng Provincial and Silverton police are still on the hunt for one suspect who managed to escape during the shootout.
An anonymous eyewitness described the scene as a war zone. “I was sitting in traffic when I heard shots, easily 14 or 15. It sounded like warfare. The next moment I saw the police helicopter fly over and a police vehicle come speeding past,” said the witness.
“A short distance down the highway, on the N4 westbound, I saw a man lying next to the road behind an Audi.”
According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu, one of the suspects died after his arrest. “He started to vomit and collapsed. He died on scene.”
According to a reliable source, the suspect had died of a heart attack.
