No fewer than 21 Police officers facing criminal charges including corruption and theft were recently dismissed.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the move formed part of police management’s effort to clean up the SA Police Service (SAPS).
“They (the accused officers) are criminally charged with corruption, theft, and defeating the ends of justice. This is after they were shamefully dismissed as members of the organisation during their departmental trial,” said Naidoo.
“The officials were arrested after the gathering of intensive intelligence information about illegal activities involving gold-dust in the gold-fields area. [sic]”
All of the officers, whose names were released, were dismissed on 30 July 2015 for departmental transgressions committed in September 2014.
“This sanction is an example that corruption and misconduct will not be tolerated within the ranks of the SAPS, said Naidoo.
National police commissioner Riah Phiyega added: “One of the primary reasons I have ordered the setting up of the national trial investigative unit is to speedily investigate and deal with rogue police officers.”
Naidoo said this brought to 1463 the total number of police members suspended under Phiyega’s watch the past three years.
Another 250 members remained on suspension about two thirds of whom were are suspended without pay.
Phiyega said: “I urge every member of the SAPS to let these dismissals be a reminder of what the outcome will be if any member is caught transgressing.”
