NATIONAL NEWS: Another police officer shot dead
One police officer was shot dead while another is in hospital after being attacked.
A police officer was shot dead at the Orange Farm train station in the early hours of Thursday.
“Two police officers were visiting the train station guards when they were attacked by two men,” said police spokesperson Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.
One of the officers was hit in the upper body and died on the scene. His colleague was assaulted.
“The firearms of the officers and security guards were taken from them before the suspects ran away,” said Dlamini.
The surviving officer was rushed to a local hospital and was said to be in a serious but stable condition.
The motive of the attack was believed to be to acquire the firearms.
Gauteng police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba urged people to team up with the police in their efforts to deal with the killing of police officers.
Democratic Alliance provincial spokesperson for community safety Michele Clarke expressed sadness over the death of the officer.
“It is of extreme concern that police officials are being so blatantly targeted by criminals and we call on anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and provide any evidence they may have,” she said.
“We have to stand behind our police, and make it clear to criminals that they will not be tolerated in our communities.”
Dlamini urged anyone with information that could help catch the attackers to anonymously contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to sms the information to Crime Line on 32211.
