Man caught after high-speed chase
A man was arrested yesterday after a high-speed car chase.
Three men fleeing from the police crashed into a tree in Eersterust on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of one of them.
The other two men escaped, police spokesperson Sam Shabambo said on Thursday.
He said the three were believed to have been on their way to commit a crime when the police intercepted them.
A high-speed car chase ensued and the men succeeded in evading the police as they sped through two suburbs. They came to a sudden halt when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a tree in Titus Avenue, Eersterust.
Two men ran away after the crash. The third one also tried to escape, but ran into trouble as he chose to cut through a residential yard.
He encountered a dog which attacked him, giving the police an opportunity to catch up. The man suffered bite wounds to his left hand before he was arrested.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Cruze the men were driving was hi-jacked in Lyttleton in July last year.
Police found two 9mm pistols, two magazines and live ammunition, pepper spray, gloves and burglary tools in the car.
The arrested man would appear in court soon, said Shabambo.
The search for his accomplices was continuing.
“The arrest came as a result of the outstanding collaboration between various units and stations within the police,” said Shabambo.
