Pistorius to be released soon
Culpable homicide convict Oscar Pistorius is set to be released from Kgosi Mampuru II prison soon.
Oscar Pistorius will be out of prison in less than two weeks and those standing behind him have started doing the countdown already.
Support for Pistorius has been pouring in ever since the news broke that he will be eligible for parole on August 21, two days after what would have been Reeva Steenkamp’s 32nd birthday.
There’s even a Facebook page called ‘Support for Oscar Pistorius’. This fan-made page, which has over 2 000 Facebook likes, was created in 2013 after Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
In 15 days, the man known as the ‘Blade Runner’ will probably be walking out of the Kgosi Mampuru II prison and heading home. He would have at least served one sixth of his prison term imposed by Judge Thokozile Masipa last year.
While Pistorius is expected to be out soon, the National Prosecuting Authority has made it clear that its plans to appeal against Masipa’s culpable homicide conviction were going ahead.
The State wants him to be convicted of the more serious charge of murder.
It has until 28 August to file the appeal application papers.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in October last year for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Judge Masipa handed down a prison of five years.
