Two more attacks in Groenkloof reserve
Tshwane Metro confirms two muggings the past weekend in Groenkloof Nature Reserve.
Two separate muggings were reported in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve this past weekend, the Tshwane metro said.
“There were two incidents of muggings in the facility and the matter was responded to swiftly by members of our Tshwane metro police department,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
An anonymous eyewitness said those attacked this weekend included a mother and her two teenage daughters.
“We were having picnic at Mushupeng picnic site and just heard a woman run down from the hill and screaming for help. She said a few guys attacked her and her two daughters. She managed to get away to alert us. They had bound them and hurt them,” the witness said.
“A large number of people started looking and I drove straight up to R21 fence to see if any activity along the fence but could find nothing. We could not find her one daughter for more than an hour. Eventually she was found.”
This account was similar to what recently happened to Fanie Terblanche (62) and his wife Ina (59), who were tied up, beaten and robbed in the Groenkloof reserve while on a hiking trail.
The latest muggings are the fifth and sixth attacks in nature reserves in the metro in recent months.
On Thursday 21 May, a father and son cycling at the Voortrekker Monument were attacked and robbed by two men who pelted them with large rocks.
A 19-year-old Danish girl and a 16-year-old Centurion boy were robbed, beaten and tied up at the monument on 27 March and 2 May respectively. Both were cycling on their mountain bikes at the time, and have since recovered.
Mashigo said the attacks worried the metro.
“This is a matter of concern and will again be discussed with the chief of metro as part of looking into the broader safety related challenges,” he said.
“We are doing everything in our power to manage this situation. Visitors are urged to be vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activities to the management at the reserve.”
