Meeting held over deadly S-curve
Stakeholders meet over the straightening of Van Der Hoff Road at the railway tracks where several people have lost their lives.
The first steps to fight for the straightening of a deadly S-curve in Van der Hoff Road near Kameeldrift West have been taken.
Parents of the youngsters that tragically lost their lives at the curve in June and other concerned parties met on Wednesday to discuss ways of getting the road straightened.
Hettie Jordaan, who has been actively involved in the process, focused on changes that could be made to the road.
“We have been talking to the Gauteng road and transport department (Gautrans) about the problem and they have put up some measures to warn motorists and to get them to slow down,” she said.
Jordaan said barriers and other traffic-calming measures at the curve had helped prevent fatalities before.
The S-curve has caused several deaths and many injuries.
Jordaan felt that speeding was also to blame.
“I was driving on the road one day when I saw another vehicle overtaking at the S-curve. The speed that people drive on this road is a problem,” said Jordaan.
At the meeting, parents of the youngster that died emphasized that something needed to be done to reduce the speed of motorists or to straighten the road.
Jordaan said: “We are going to have another meeting with the people from Gautrans to hear how they can further help us with the matter and make the road safe.”
A mass meeting was still being planned to give the community as a whole an opportunity to discuss the issue, she said.
