Beware of ATM card scammers
A woman falls victim to an ATM card scam in Eersterust.
Eersterust resident, Terry Berry needed money so she thought an ATM closest to the Eersterust police station would be safest. How wrong she was.
Berry, told Rekord on Wednesday, that last Saturday, she had gone to that ATM to make a withdrawal.
There was a man ahead of her in the queue so she waited for him to complete his transaction.
“As I was struggling to insert my bank card into the machine, the man hurriedly returned to ‘take a receipt’ he had left behind.”
The man then pretended to help Berry.
“He told me that the ‘system had changed’ and quickly grabbed my card out of my hand,” she said.
The man then pretended to insert the card into the machine before “pressing buttons on the ATM”.
“He then ran off…,” she said
Berry said it took her a while to realise the man had made off with her card.
“I pulled out another card from my bag and made the withdrawal but as I was busy with that, another man came to me to ask what had happened,” she said.
“I just knew he was with the other thief so I ignored him and also ran off.”
Berry said that about five minutes later, money had been withdrawn from her account.
Captain Tandelani Mudziwa, station commander of the Eersterust SAPS, could not confirm that ‘several’ ATM card scams were being perpetrated in the area.
“Nothing has been reported at this [police] station,” he said.
He encouraged residents to report any and all crimes in the area to be investigated.
A few weeks ago, police arrested three men in Centurion on suspicion of perpetrating ATM card scams.
