Two shot and killed in taxi violence
Taxi violence allegedly broke out in Hercules on Friday evening, where two alleged taxi patrollers were left dead.
Police on Friday evening said two taxi association patrollers were shot dead after an alleged taxi violence broke out in Hercules in the west of Pretoria.
Several shots were fired in Van der Hoff road near Bremer Street at about 19:15. Residents of the area asked each other on social media about the shots they heard fired in the area.
Police provincial spokesperson, Major Mack Mngomezulu confirmed the shooting was due to taxi association fighting.
“After a taxi was impounded by taxi association patrollers, for picking up people where it was not supposed to, when the owner of the vehicle went to fetch his vehicle, people from his association allegedly arrived at the scene and two patrollers were shot dead,” he said.
Hercules Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairman Conrad Naudé told Rekord a similar story of the taxi driver picking up passengers where he was not supposed to.
“The taxi drivers are apparently not supposed to pick up people but just drop them off in the street. So apparently this driver picked up people and was stopped by the taxi association patrollers,” he said.
Naudé said the patrollers then called other members to come to where the taxi was. He said the people apparently got off in Bremer Street and walked to where the taxi was stopped.
“Shots were fired and two people were killed during the incident,” confirmed Naudé.
At about 20:50 on Friday evening were waiting for forensics to come pick up the two bodies.
Mngomezule said more information on the incident would be made available on Saturday.
