From dumping site to park
Maunde Square Park a face lift for the Atteridgeville community.
As part of the two parks per ward programme, the Tshwane metro recently opened the Maunde Square Park to the community of Atteridgeville.
Maunde Square Park forms part of the mayoral programme initiated three years ago to change the face of the city and improve access to recreational facilities especially in the previously disadvantaged areas of the metro.
The park was developed on land previously used as a dumping site and informal trade area.
The metro has said in a statement the development of parks in communities was not only about the restoration of dignity and a high quality of life but also brought with it employment, skills transfer and the advantages of a green environment.
It was said the metro has assisted to preserve the much needed public open spaces and reduced their abuse through illegal dumping and criminality.
“As one of the most important improvements in the metro, the programme has led to environmental and social spin-offs such as reducing the discharge of illegal waste and improving health.
“Positive changes influence positive social behaviour within communities.”
Due to the location of the site near Lucas Moripe Stadium, the design attempted to create a linear park along the street to link the stadium and the park.
The park’s key design features are the open walkway with street furniture to facilitate the use of the park as a pedestrian thoroughfare, seating areas, game area with a chess set, play areas, multi-functional spaces for events and gatherings, roadside parking areas, braai areas and free Wi-Fi.
