Sunnyside ‘prophet’ to appear in court for theft

"We advise members of the public to reject any form of help or so-called "blessings," and prayers offered by unknown persons who approach them in public and later claim to know more about the potential victim's misfortunes."

An alleged prophet (31) is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

He is accused of stealing among other things, three laptops and cash from a 19-year-old student, according to police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.

“He promised to turn around the fortunes of a 19-year-old student by issuing him with lotto numbers.”

Mavimbela said the “prophet”  was arrested on Wednesday after the student spotted him in Sunnyside in possession of an item that he had stolen from him.

He said the suspect’s arrest was seen as a breakthrough.

“Previously several individuals were reportedly approached by people claiming to be prophets and ‘prophesied’ over the personal circumstances of their intended targets before the victims were asked to hand over their properties for blessings.”

He said in most cases the “prophets” drove away with their victim’s properties after they (victims) were sent to buy water to be used during the “blessing” session.
