A 56-year-old man, who was killed in an apparent botched hi-jacking near a smallholding in Erasmia, SMS’ed his housemates shortly after he was shot.
Pieter van Wyk was on his way back home after giving a tenant a lift to work when he was killed, according to family member Michelle Saayman.
Van Wyk was shot and killed just 500 metres from his home in Erasmia.
The shooting is said to have happened yesterday around 17:00.
“When [his housemates] tried to call back they discovered his phone was already off,” said Saayman.
Van Wyk was shot in his left shoulder and the bullet is said to have penetrated his heart.
The unknown number of robbers made off with Van Wyk’s cellular phone, but did not steal his vehicle.
Saayman believes this is because the car had crashed into a sand bank with large rocks on the side of the road presumably after he had been shot.
“When the paramedics arrived they found that nothing could be done to save him,” said Saayman.
“The family is devastated and our hearts are in pieces.”
She described Van Wyk as someone who was always willing to do right by his fellow man, “sometimes even at his own expense”.
Van Wyk is survived by his mother, his sister Petro and brother Derick.
