The latest crime statistics released by the SA police service indicate that murder has gone up by 3.2% in Gauteng.
In the province, 4 233 murder cases were reported in 2017/18, which is 132 more than the previous year.
In total, 20 336 murder cases were reported in the country which is an increase of 6.9%.
On Tuesday, police minister Bheki Cele said the crime stats were nothing to write home about.

He said the police had dropped the ball when it comes to murder.
“We cannot allow the citizens of the country to take it as a norm that when you are on the road you must be hijacked or take it as a norm that 57 people die daily from guns and knives.”

Cele said the worst thing that can be done was to come and give the same stats next year.
“South Africans must not take it as a norm that they can be hijacked, robbed and killed every day. We have to pick up the ball and change the situation for the better,” he said.
