Matrics warned – no ID, no certificate

This came after a parent raised concern as her 19-year-old daughter was struggling to get a smart ID card.

The Gauteng department of education has announced that learners who do not have smart ID cards would be allowed to write their examinations and receive their results. However, they would not be able to receive their national senior certificate should they qualify.

This came after a Mamelodi East parent raised concern as her 19-year-old daughter was struggling to get a smart ID card.

Maria Manaka (49) said she applied for her daughter’s ID earlier this year, but the department of home affairs was “delaying the application”.

The grade 12 learner was set to start writing her examination next week.

The application for Itumeleng Manaka (19) was lodged around May this year but was still waiting for approval.

Maria said 30 days after the application was lodged, she received a message from the department asking for supporting documents within 90-days.

She said she forwarded all the documents but she was still waiting for the ID to be approved.

Maria said she went back to the department to submit more documents but the ID had still not been issued.

“The future of my daughter is on the line here, but the officials at the department keep on asking for more documents every time I visit the offices.”

Itumeleng said she was prepared for her final examinations and nothing would distract her.

She said after completing her final examinations she was planning to study to become a teacher next year.

But her challenge was that she was unable to apply to any college or university because she does not have an ID.

Gauteng department of education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department has already engaged with all districts and schools to inform them that IDs were compulsory for the registration of grade 12 candidates but the concession was granted to register candidates without IDs.

With regard to Itumeleng, the department said: “…That she continues with the process at home affairs. Once we receive the ID it will then be submitted to Umalusi to issue the certificate…

“The department is confident that the final national senior certificate examinations will be conducted successfully and we anticipate quite positive results.”

The department of home affairs has yet to respond to Rekord’s query.
