Damaged CBD water pipe successfully removed

“Unfortunately, we cannot put a truck outside every flat and corner but collect as much water as you need.”

The damaged Salvokop water supply pipe was removed successfully on Monday.

Sunnyside ward councillor Shaun Wilkinson, giving residents feedback, said: “We are replacing it with a brand-new pipe and it is being prepped for the new connection, at a factory off-site.”

He urged residents to collect sufficient water for their households.

“Unfortunately, we cannot put a truck outside every flat and on every corner, so try to collect more water than just enough to boil a kettle. Try to cover all aspects of your requirements, where possible,” he urged.

He said at times, the trucks had to go fill up.

“Chat to the driver, and confirm if he is returning, so that you don’t wait in vain.”

Wilkinson said that the repair workers were functioning on a minimum amount of sleep.

“We are still doing our best to meet the 7-day deadline.”

He also urged residents not to interfere with the water trucks and fire hydrants.

He said any resident that had concerns or challenges, could contact the city or himself.

The City of Tshwane in an official statement also said it could not rush repairs.

However, “we remain hopeful that by Friday, water will be in the water network system”.

Spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo said the Salvokop pipeline burst on Thursday afternoon and impacted supply to Sunnyside and nearby areas.

“Water supply to various areas as well as southern portion of Pretoria CBD will experience a disruption following the bursting of the supply pipe from Salvokop around 14:30 on Thursday.”

To repair the pipe, the metro had to shut supply from Thursday at 22:00.
