Leopard caught in the north

The leopard was seen by community members wandering the streets in Klipgat on Wednesday.

The SPCA is investigating how a leopard escaped from a nature reserve and ended up in Klipgat township, north of Pretoria.

The leopard was seen by community members wandering the streets in Klipgat on Wednesday.

“We were informed about the leopard and we immediately attended the issue and injected it to put it to sleep,” said Dewald Wahlstrand, Tshwane SPCA general manager.

Wahlstrand said when they arrived, the leopard was hiding under a vehicle in a yard.

“Fortunately, there was no cost to human life,” he said.

“We took it to a health facility to check for injuries. The animal is very healthy and under our watch.”

Wahlstrand, said an investigation has been launched to ascertain how it got out. It will then be returned to the nature reserve after the investigation.
