Klofies teacher loses long battle against Covid

Japie Claassens (45) passed away in hospital after a six-month long battle with Covid-19.

Colleagues and friends are mourning the death of a Hoërskool Waterkloof teacher who died on Monday evening.

Japie Claassens (45) passed away in hospital after a six-month long battle with Covid-19.

Hoërskool Waterkloof announced the death on Facebook saying that it was a great loss for the school.

“Our hearts go out to Lindie (his wife) as well as his two daughters in this terribly difficult time,” the statement read.

Staff and learners gathered at the school’s pavilion where they paid their respects to Claassens.

Flowers and candles were also placed at the school’s chapel in memory of the teacher.

He worked at the school for over seven years where he was also a cricket coach.

Cobus Pienaar, cricket director at the school said Claassens was a mentor for many boys over the past decade.

“Japie has left deep footprints in Waterkloof cricket and definitely leaves a big void for his family, friends, fellow coaches and players,” he said.

“His passionate, ‘out of the box’ thinking approach to coaching has given the boys a lot of freedom to find themselves as cricketers and human beings.

“We are eternally grateful to have your share of the sport and are sure you will always continue to support us at the feet of our Heavenly Father. Kloof cricket salutes you for an incredible innings and fighting spirit to the bitter end.”

Claassens’ friend Neels de Villiers, described him as a talented sportsman, coach and true friend.

“Our England cricket tour with Japie, Lindie and their daughters was a highlight in our friendship,” he said.

“A special characteristic of Japie was his unconditional love for Lindie and his daughters.

“Japie, old friend, we’re going to miss you.”

Former South African rugby union referee and former colleague, Ben Crouse said he was devastated by the loss.

“His passing is devastating news,” he said.

“He was an amazing man, friend, colleague and a Klofie through and through. Rest in peace my mate. You have made a difference in the lives of many young people.”

Claassens is survived by his wife and two daughters, Anja and Nadia.
