Cable theft rises in Akasia

“Our office has received numerous allegations to this effect, however no concrete evidence has been provided."

The prevalence of cable theft incidents in Akasia, north of Pretoria, were on the rise, police warned.

“There are people who are stealing cables around the Akasia area.

“These people are believed to be dressed in Tshwane metro work-suits when they go about the criminality,” police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said.

According to their preliminary investigations, the imposters reportedly also drove in unmarked vans.

She called on members of the public to report the imposters to either them or the Crime Stop line.

“We need to warn the community to be vigilant of these criminals,” Mdluli said.

Meanwhile, Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba confirmed they were aware of the alleged imposters.

“Our office has received numerous allegations to this effect, however, no concrete evidence has been provided to enable SAPS and TMPD to follow up on the alleged incidents,” he said.

Bokaba further said that while residents could approach workers while they were on site to establish their purpose of work, they should exercise caution when doing so.

“Caution is to be exercised when doing so, in case it’s vandals working on the network, to avoid confrontation,” he said.

He urged residents to record descriptions and registration numbers of the vehicles the bogus workers used and provide these details to police.

“Where possible and safe to do so, take pictures or video recordings,” Bokaba said.

Members of the public who noticed any suspicious activity or workers were urged to notify the TMPD on 012 358 9075/6 or SAPS on 08600 10111.
