Central SAPS, Steve Biko hospital celebrate the elderly

The Pretoria Central police and Steve Biko academic hospital hosted an outreach to commemorate October 1 International Day for Older People with some local elderly folk.

Police corporate communication officer, Constable Thabang Nkhumise said that the elderly are subjected to all sorts of abuse and other ills facing the demographic.

“The elderly is one of the most vulnerable groups in society.

“As the month of October is dedicated to supporting older persons, both organisations joined forces in order to engage with older persons and the community at large about the types of abuses elderly persons endure on a daily basis,” said Nkhumise.

Elderly residents in the area were given the opportunity to engage with their local law enforcement and medical practitioners on issues affecting their communities as well as their health.

“A number of pamphlets were distributed to further sensitise them about their rights, the type of abuses and the channels to follow when they are faced with any issues that will harm their well-being,” continued Nkhumise.

The elderly attendees were also instructed to call a special helpline designed for dealing with emergencies related to older residents. Emergencies can be reported to the Action on Elder Abuse on 0800 003 081 or easy to remember, SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

“We believe that elderly people should be able to live free from fear or harm and ensure that their rights are not infringed by anyone. Let’s join hands and make it our duty to fight abuse of any kind or form,” concluded Nkhumise.
