Level two weather warning for northern Gauteng with severe thunderstorms

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level two warning for the Northern regions of Gauteng with severe thunderstorms and strong, damaging winds expected on Sunday.

A yellow level two warning indicates strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail, and heavy downpours.

Some of the impacts of weather of this severity include flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges.

Difficult driving conditions and travel delays due to wet roads and reduced visibility can lead to vehicle accidents.

Vehicles, homes and garage ports are at risk of damage due to hail and informal houses are particularly at risk due to strong winds.

The South African Weather Service advises residents to follow these safety tips in the event of a flood:

– Stay indoors and off the roads if possible

– Listen to the special warnings on the radio and TV.

– Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water reaches above your ankles.

– Move to higher ground.

– If trapped in a flood in a vehicle, abandon it and climb to higher ground.

– In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.

– Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building.

– In rural areas protect/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.

– Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended.
