MMC encourages residents, police to fight GBVF together
855 women and 245 children were killed in South Africa between April and June. Over 11 000 assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm cases with female victims and 1 670 involving children were opened with the police according to police minister Bheki Cele.
Tshwane MCC for community social development and community services Peggy de Bruin has called on residents of Pretoria to join hands with her in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
De Bruin said as the country commemorates 16 Days of Activism against Violence against women and children the metro had a responsibility to protect the community and children.
She said GBVF statistics in South Africa are shocking.
“Women get beaten up, raped and killed daily and it’s the same for our children who are being reported missing every single day,” she said.
She added that the South African Constitution protects everyone without exception.
“It’s not right for one person to infringe on the rights of another,” she said.
De Bruin warned perpetrators who are still roaming the streets that what they are doing cannot be tolerated.
She urged law enforcement and the courts to assist in fighting GBVF.
“Let’s have serious convictions to send a message to those who will in the future think of abusing women and children to refrain from doing so,” she said.
She said communities must work together to put an end to the monster known as GBVF and must report any wrongdoing regardless of who’s doing it or where it’s happening.
“It could be an uncle doing something to a child or a neighbour just reporting it. It could be at church or anywhere we see these things. Let’s report them to put an end to all the social ills in our community,” she said.
“Children get killed and raped by neighbours and people they trust and this cannot continue. We are saying enough is enough and we need to put an end to this,” she concluded.
