Atteridgeville SAPS and partners conduct door-to-door GBV campaign

Atteridgeville SAPS reported that the community was pleased with the effort.

Atteridgeville SAPS and partners conducted a door-to-door festive safety awareness campaign recently in the informal settlements in Pretoria West.

Members of the Siyabangena team, councillors and emergency medical services (EMS) joined the police in the quest.

The partners knocked on doors to inform residents of the importance of knowing crime prevention tips relating to women and children this festive season.

“Mothers were also advised not to leave their children alone as they visit taverns and shebeens, especially at night,” said Atteridgeville SAPS spokesperson Constable MM Rikhotso.

In light of the November 21 incident in Atteridgeville in which an irate mob attacked and killed a patient in the back of an ambulance, EMS spoke to community members about the dangers of harming paramedics and attacking ambulances.

“The damage to an ambulance was condemned by Mr Tumelo Tshele, a member of the EMS team who told the community to assist in ensuring that paramedics feel safe and are safe while performing their duties,” said Rikhotso.

In addition to attacking the man, the mob also attacked Gauteng EMS first responders and looted supplies from the ambulance.

Local ward councillor Mmakgoko Phasha encouraged the community to work hand-in-hand with the police and EMS in ensuring that the community is kept safe.

Atteridgeville SAPS reported that the community was pleased with the effort and asked a lot of questions about GBV intervention programmes that the police offered.
