Clifton Road partially opens after months of closure
Ward 55 councillor says the next sinkhole to be fixed is metres down the same road.
Lyttelton residents are relieved Clifton Road partially reopened earlier this week after more than a year of closure as a sinkhole therein was being repaired.
Not only the nearest businesses, which include Centurion Hospice, will benefit from the the road being usable again but also Unitas hospital.
Hyla van den Berg of hospice told Rekord that she is extremely happy.
“We are really delighted about the opening of the road, but we remain concerned about the other sinkhole about 400m down the road meaning that part of the road is still closed.”
Ward 57 councillor David Farquharson said he was excited to share the news of the reopening with residents as the closure had caused many road users in the area great inconvenience. Farquharson said the next target for the metro was fixing the sinkhole down the road.
“The new sinkhole further north in Clifton is the next challenge,” said the ward councillor.
Earlier last month a 6m deep sinkhole formed in Clifton Road near the Nxusani home after a particularly heavy rainstorm. This resulted in the family having to vacate the home after its insurer declared it unsafe.
There are now more than 50 sinkholes in Centurion, concentrated in Lyttelton, Valhalla and Pierre van Ryneveld.
