Visit the SAAF museum to understand its rich history this December

“The purpose of the SAAF Museum is to collect, preserve and exhibit articles,” says Major Ntshangase.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) museum is one of the places families can visit this festive season to fully understand and appreciate the richness of the country’s military, historical and existing museum infrastructure.

The museum houses its main branch at air force base Swartkop where various historical artefacts of the SAAF are displayed.

According to acting commander of the SAAF museum Major Ntokozo Ntshangase, the facility remained an integral part of safeguarding the collective heritage and history of the SAAF.

“The purpose of the museum is to collect, preserve and exhibit articles and records pertaining to the heritage and traditions of the SAAF and military aviation associated therewith.

Through various initiatives, such as the SAAF museum airshow, it strives to generate interest and educate the general public, particularly the youth, in military aviation,” Ntshangase said.

One of the vital functions of the museum was aviation research and share the information related to the history and traditions of the SAAF it gathered.

He described the museum’s collective heritage project as a typical attempt at presenting a balanced and inclusive history.

“The collective heritage project was initiated to identify and address the apparent gaps in the presentation of aviation evolution, the participation of former non-statutory forces and the absence of such force’s military artefacts in displays,” Ntshangase added.

Recently a Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) delegation led by its chief political commissar, Major General Henry Masiko visited the museum.

The institution described the visit as a strategic exploration and fact-finding exercise .

The museum is open Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-15:00 and Saturdays from 08:30-13:00.
