Tshwane closes Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant

The city of Tshwane has announced a temporary shut down of the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant.

The city of Tshwane has announced a temporary shut down of the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant.

The metro’s Lindela Mashiga attributed the plant closure to the recent rainfall.

“As a result of persistent rain over the past few days, the raw water in the Bronkhorstspruit river has increased in turbidity,” Mashigo said.

This meant the treatment plant was unable to clean water.

“Since the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant is unable to treat water from the said river, because of the extremely high turbidity, the plant has been shut down temporarily.”

Mashigo said the plant closure was mainly due to the city wanting to make sure it provided clean and drinkable water to residents.

“Once the quality of the raw water has improved, the treatment plant will be put back into operation,” he added.

Areas that will be affected by the closure of the plant include:

  • Bronkhorstspruit Town
  • Zithobeni
  • Rethabiseng
  • Ekangala
  • Ekandustria

Mashigo guaranteed residents that the city would dispatch water tankers to all affected areas.

“The City of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered as a result of this temporary shutdown,” he added.

Earlier in the year, the municipality had to shut down Temba water treatment due to equipment failure.

At the time Mashigo said the equipment failure resulted in low standards, which led to the city’s decision to close it.
