Millions worth of fines issued during the festive season
The multiparty coalition government commended the TMPD for their relentless efforts in ensuring the safety of the residents of Tshwane during the recent festive season.
The Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) has issued over R5-million worth of fines over the festive season, despite warnings and campaigns conducted by the metro on motorists to be safer on the roads.
From December 1 to January 10, TMPD officers undertook various operations to increase visibility and ensure effective road policing.
During this period, a total of 6 737 vehicles were stopped and searched, 4 597 people were searched and 9 207 vehicles were inspected for roadworthiness.
Numerous transgressions were detected during the operations, which resulted in a total of 9 210 infringement notices being issued with a combined value of over R5-million.
Furthermore, 196 business premises were inspected to ensure that they comply with the necessary legislation and by-laws.
At least 102 businesses were found to be contravening a variety of acts and by-laws, and corresponding fines were issued.
TMPD officers also made five arrests for illegal trading, two for reckless and negligent driving, two for driving while under the influence, and one each for theft, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, common assault, and possession of drugs.
TMPD also assisted in the completion of 86 accident reports.
MMC for Community Safety Grandi Theunissen said while traffic on the major roads has decreased as people have returned home and back to work, he wanted to remind residents to drive carefully.
“This especially applies around schools where new learners are still getting used to their new surroundings.
“Be considerate and drive slowly,” he said.
