East matrics conquer Covid-19, load-shedding

“It is a relief that it is finally over.”

Matriculants receiving their results on Friday were ecstatic about conquering load-shedding and the Covid-19 pandemic en route to their prestigious achievement.

The 2022 grade 12 learners in Pretoria had to work very hard in their grade 10 to 12 years battling load-shedding and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 18-year-old matric learners from Hoërskool Waterkloof gave us some insight into how their schooling journey between grades 10 and 12 went in light of the challenges faced.

Inge Venter said: “I am extremely happy and blessed to have overcome unforeseen challenges leading to receiving matric results. I managed to obtain seven distinctions in my seven subjects, achieving over 90% in them.”

Venter said preliminary exams were extremely challenging, while 2022 was a difficult year filled with ups and downs.

“I managed through all the dilemmas as I had support from friends and family.”

She said support was vital in high school as learners constantly needed a push without too much pressure added.

She said she would be studying accounting at Stellenbosch university and thereafter train at PWC with the view to opening her own non-profit in the future.

Rochelle van der Vyver said it was incredible to finish her secondary schooling phase.

“It is a relief that it is finally over.”

Van der Vyver said she was fortunate that her hard work paid off as she scored distinctions for all her nine subjects.

“It is a cherry on the cake after the hard years that we have been through.”

She said it was challenging as there wasn’t much time to study during load-shedding.

“It is difficult to study during load-shedding, especially working with candles or one light when it was dark.

I had to make it work or rise earlier.”

Van der Vyver said she was looking followed to study medicine at the University of Pretoria and then specialise in dermatology.

Christiaan Jansen van Vuuren said he was happy with eight distinctions.

“I was excited waiting through the night for the release of the results.”

He said his mother passed away towards the end of his exams and that was a difficult period for him.

Jansen van Vuuren said he would study actuarial science at UP.

Ané Scheepers was also happy for her seven distinctions.

“Covid-19 was a difficult process as matric had more work, while load-shedding felt punishing during preparations.”

Niel Voges said he was proud of himself for his seven distinctions.

Voges said Covid he had to schedule new routines that were hard to adapt to during load-shedding.

“I had to charge LED lights before the power went off, however, it was not great.”

He said he would be studying engineering at UP.

Die Hoërskool Menlopark learners were also excited about their results.

Clarise Swart said she obtained eight distinctions, but it was tough for her.

“I aim to go study medicine at Stellenbosch University or UP.

Danae Louw said: “I was stressed earlier because some papers carried inaccurate results for myself, however, I got to school and realised I had seven distinctions.

I don’t know what I want to study; however. I am looking at medical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg.”

Schalk Grobler said studying through Covid-19 was enjoyable for him and learning that he had scored eight distinctions was exhilarating.

“Studying during Covid was a breeze as I could work at my own pace.”

He said he would study medicine at Wits.

Connor McDonogh said he had been nervous before receiving the results, however, was excited to have passed.

“I am going to study online for a German course in artificial intelligence.”

Tshwane mayor Randall Williams congratulated the matric class of 2022.

“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the 2022 matric learners for achieving an overall pass rate of 80,1%. This is up from 76,4% in 2021. Our very own Tshwane South District, together with the Gauteng North District, were fourth and fifth best-performing districts at 89,0% and 87,7%.”
