CIT heist on the N4 near Rossouw street

Residents reported hearing an explosion and multiple gunshots, with Emer-G-Med reporting that two security officers were injured.

Details are still sketchy following an apparent cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on Monday afternoon, July 17, at about 17:00.

The incident happened on the N4 highway between Watermeyer and Rossouw streets.

Residents in the area reported hearing an explosion followed by multiple gun shots.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen said paramedics were on scene.

“The roadway is currently closed and we advise motorists to avoid the area”, said Van Reenen.

He said a number of armed suspects intercepted a cash-in-transit armoured vehicle, before gaining access to it using explosives.

“The suspects then made off with an undisclosed amount of money in an unknown direction.”

Two security officers sustained moderate injuries and were treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

Van Reenen said the police were also on scene and would be conducting further investigations.

A motorist that witnessed the incident told Rekord she was traveling with her partner towards Pretoria on the highway when they saw an explosion.

“[We were] in the other lane when the explosion happened. The roof of the cash van almost hit the car infront of ours,” said the eyewitness.

“Those guys are fast. There were a lot of them.”

She said the men were heavily armed and had set a blue BMW alight.

“There were many cars, I couldn’t follow which was which. We just took cover and ducked down as soon as they started shooting.”
