Foot chase in Centurion ends in arrest
A suspected street robber was caught with a knife and an imitation firearm after he was seen watching a group of schoolchildren.
A man was arrested in the Centurion CBD around noon on Wednesday, July 26, following a dramatic foot chase.
Police and security officials were conducting a clandestine operation when they noticed a man watching a group of schoolchildren.
Lyttelton SAPS spokesperson, Captain Dave Miller, said that the operation focused on street robberies in the Centurion CBD.
“The team spotted a suspect that was busy watching a group of schoolchildren, and when he saw one of the vehicles, he began to walk away,” said Miller.
Police and private security members kept track of the suspect until a marked police unit could approach him for further investigation.
Miller said that the suspect moved in the direction of the taxi rank.
When he saw the marked unit approaching, he ran into the local informal settlement.
“A lengthy foot pursuit began. The suspect was running through the shacks but was no match for the fit and dedicated members hot on his trail,” said Miller.
When the suspect was apprehended, they found a knife and an imitation firearm in his possession.
Miller said that the suspect will face an initial charge of possession of dangerous weapons.
He said that the SAPS would be looking at additional robbery charges once the investigation has concluded.
Lyttelton SAPS station commander Brigadier M Toohey thanked all the officers who were involved in the arrest.
The brigadier added that the community needs to feel safe in the area and that the members under her command will go above and beyond to ensure that the criminal element does not have free reign in Centurion.
