Wierdapark community takes a stand on security

The local residents’ association has honoured security and emergency workers as heroes of the community.

Wierdapark Residents Association (WPRA) honoured its community heroes and affirmed the residents’ commitment to their community on Saturday.

The event brought residents, businesses and other stakeholders together to promote safety, security, and environmental consciousness within the community.

WPRA chairperson Liza Vorster said the event at Wierda Shopping Centre was the first of several safety, security, and municipal initiatives aimed at creating a safer, cleaner and sustainable environment for all residents and businesses in Wierdapark.

“A highlight of the day was the WPRA’s initiative of appreciation towards safety, security, and emergency responders,” said Vorster.

“These heroes of the community were treated to a drive-by service, where they received refreshments as a token of gratitude for their selfless dedication to keeping the community safe.”

Community members also got to meet the important people behind the services that keep them safe, as well as a ride on a fire truck.

The WPRA aims to support communal solidarity where residents can stand together for their collective well-being.

“The solemn moment of reflection prompted by the sounding of the fire truck horn served as a reminder of the challenges faced by first responders in their line of duty,” said Vorster.

Wierdabrug CPF sector 3 exco member, Kirstie van den Berg said the day was a “huge success” as residents joined the CPF.

The CPF Sector 3 covers the areas of Amberfield, Celtisdal, Eldoraigne, Eldo Glen, Heuweloord, Heuwelsig, Raslouw, Rooihuiskraal North, Wierda Glen, and Wierdapark.

“For those unaware of who the CPF are and their involvement in the community, this was a great awareness drive to inform the public.

“The CPF makes a very real difference to the security in the area by their visibility and quick response to emergencies, while establishing a close working relationship between residents, security companies, TMPD and SAPS.”

Van den Berg urged residents to call the following CPF numbers in an emergency: 072 822 9312 or 012 884 0160.
